 ZipLine is Coles County Council on Aging's affordable fixed-route public transportation service, connecting residents throughout Mattoon and Charleston with convenient stops at shopping centers, medical facilities, community resources, schools, and other popular destinations.


Unlike traditional bus systems, ZipLine offers the flexibility of scheduled stops with limited route deviations, making it easier to get where you need to go.

how the zipline works

 ZipLine operates on designated routes with scheduled stops throughout Mattoon and Charleston. Along the route, buses may leave the regular route briefly to pick up or drop off riders who have requested a route deviation in advance.


If you're traveling between Mattoon and Charleston, simply transfer buses at the LifeSpan Center there is no additional fare to continue your trip.

  • Available at any Dial-A-Ride office

Ride as often as you'd like throughout the month.

Regular Monthly Pass $40

Monthly passes:

  • Available from any Dial-A-Ride driver 
  • Valid on both ZipLine and Dial-A-Ride Demand Response service 
  • Good for unlimited rides during the calendar month

requesting a route deviation

Need a pickup that's slightly off the regular route?

ZipLine offers limited route deviations to provide additional convenience while keeping buses on schedule.

Deviation Guidelines

  • Pickups and drop-offs must be within ¼ mile of an established ZipLine route. 
  • Exceptions are available for: 
    • Carle Clinic on Hurst Drive 
    • Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center 
  • Requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance. 
  • Requests are processed in the order received. 
  • One deviation is permitted per route, per hour. 
  • Drivers cannot approve deviations at the time of pickup.

dwell time

 To help maintain reliable schedules:

  • ZipLine buses do not wait longer at deviation stops than they would at regular bus stops. 
  • Riders should be ready at least 5 minutes before their scheduled pickup. 
  • Missed connections are considered a no-show and may affect future deviation requests. 
  • Drivers will allow sufficient time to safely board passengers and secure mobility devices.

 For everyone's safety and comfort:

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult and may not be left unattended. 
  • Children under 40 pounds or 40 inches must ride in an approved child safety seat supplied by the accompanying adult. 
  • Passengers are responsible for carrying their own belongings onto the bus. Items should fit safely on your lap or at your feet. 
  • Only trained service animals are permitted. 
  • All passengers are required to wear seatbelts.
